Secondhand smoke is not dangerous?

Be ready to put on your shocked face…but the government (EPA, Surgeon General) hasn’t exactly been telling the full truth when it comes to the dangers of secondhand smoke.

Most people whole-heartedly belive that secondhand smoke (SHS) is a serious health danger to non-smokers, and thus support bans or limitations on people’s right to smoke in public (and even private) areas.

The basis for the government’s warnings on SHS are largely based upon a 1992 study which reportedly showed a statistically significant increased lung cancer risk to non-smokers.

But…

The EPA’s 1992 conclusions are not supported by reliable scientific evidence. The report has been largely discredited and, in 1998, was legally vacated by a federal judge.

In addition, the study was designed to study the effects on non-smoking spouses.  Most people believe the science has shown SHS is a serious danger to anyone and even in smaller doses. This is important as the study participants and data involves much higher levels of SHS as compared to the typical patron in a restaurant.   A non-smoking spouse of a heavy smoker is in a confined area, very close to the smoke, for longer durations, and over an extremely long amount of time (years and decades).  If the science can’t even be confirmed conclusively for these non-smoking spouses, it becomes a complete farce when they try to extend it to the rest of the population.
